STATEMENT:
“I started drawing these circular designs in the summer of 2009. The original idea is from elementary school: draw concentric circles with a compass, and fill in the spaces however you like. I’m not sure why the idea resurfaced after a 20-year absence. I think I liked its inherent egalitarianism. A lot of elements repeat, and the repetition makes the creative process also a meditative one. It’s a way of getting my feelings out on paper, and the end results sometimes function as a talisman for the recipient.

About the Sullivan Seven: I stumbled on a trailer for a documentary about Louis H. Sullivan, a Chicago architect of the early 20th century. He designed fabulously ornamented buildings and skyscrapers, and was a mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright. I was so amazed by the extent of his talent that I set myself a challenge: draw 7 designs in 7 days based on Sullivan’s work. After several days without sleep and loads of coffee, the Sullivan Seven were born. These are the ones I liked best.”

Green Line Locust, 7pm

Indie Folk & Pop

The New Heaven & the New Earth

The New Heaven and The New Earth centers around the compositions of Roger Alejandro Martinez and the production work of Jeffrey Russ. Martinez, who for years had been writing songs in various bands, found himself bored with the conventions of the indie-rock world. Russ, a classically trained cellist, found himself restricted by the dogma of music academia. When Martinez showed Russ a set of recordings he was working on, the two began collaborating. The result was The New Heaven and The New Earth’s debut EP “All Saints’ Day,” a collection of dark, vocal-harmony laden chamber pop songs, set to lyrics that deal with mythology, madness and death. Martinez’s songs on “All Saints’ Day” are augmented by Russ’ studio sensibilities, which blend unconventional and professional recording techniques.

Maggie Larson

Maggie Larson plays guitar, mandolin and piano and began writing and recording songs when she was 12. Growing up in Portland Oregon, Maggie now resides in West Philly and recently self recorded her 2nd full length album, ‘I am a Fan of Everyone Here.’ Her lo-fi indie/folk sound is catchy but earnest and she is influenced by artists such as Elliot Smith and Laura Veirs.
