A new group show of Philadelphia and New York-based artists has landed at the Green Line Powelton this week.  Curated by Philadelphia artist Ketch Wehr, the work is considering the concept of current occupation – politically, economically, socially, how we resist, how we occupy our time, and how we survive.

Meet The Small Farmers Behind Your Coffee

Choosing the coffee you drink makes a real difference in the lives of many.

October is Fair Trade Month, a good time to remember what we purchase in the United States has a direct impact in communities around the globe. Salvadoran farmer Pedro Ascencio will share the story of his community over a cup of fair trade coffee from Las Colinas co-op. With support from Catholic Relief Services’ partner Equal Exchange, the coffee from Las Colinas has gained access to the U.S. fairly traded, organic coffee market.

Fair Trade, a system of trade based on the principle that people should earn a fair profit for the items they produce, offers producers not only a fair price for their products, but safe and healthy work conditions, and long term relationships with buyers.

Come see Molly McIntyre’s stunning new paper cutout work exhibiting at the Green Line Baltimore from September 1st – October 31st.  The reception is from 5pm to 7pm on Friday the 2nd, so swing by to give a boost to First Fridays west of the Schuylkill!

McIntyre’s thoughts on the work:

“As I work on this series, I have been reconsidering the word habit, which means, among other things, “a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior,” and also, “the prevailing disposition or character of a person’s thoughts and feelings : mental makeup,” and even, “bodily appearance or makeup.” (Not to mention the archaic, “a costume characteristic of a calling, rank, or function <a nun’s habit>.”)

Without fanfare, habits make up our being. They are not theoretical: they are or they aren’t, we do something or we don’t. They are not glamorous, they are simply present. They provide us with a framework for living.”

Thanks to everyone for braving the heat for Locally Sourced on Friday!  We’d like to send out a big thank you to Neal Santos, Dock Street, The City Harvest Growers Alliance, Spruce Hill Farm, Pastor’s Produce, Pocket Farm, Farm 51, and Peggy’s Paradise.  Also, many many thanks to our incredible chef, Mick, and his killer team of cooks for their tireless efforts in producing such a great menu of tasty local and free offerings for the reception!

Come by our extra special Friday event at the Green Line Baltimore!

This reception for Neal Santos’s photography exhibit will be combining with a hyperlocal farmers’ talk from 6 pm – 8:30 pm.
Along with a produce sale and free tasty samples from some surprise local vendors, Locally Sourced promises to be fun, tasty, and informative.

This Friday we will be featuring basil lemonade, collard green and kale cous cous salad, and scallion and chive scones all made from Farm51 produce!

There is a new group show on the horizon at Green Line Powelton: “Wish You Were There.”

From August to September 2011, a selection of Philadelphia artists will be exhibiting their work considering the natural world.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, August 4th from 6 – 8pm.
