The locally-owned Green Line Cafe established its third location on Lancaster Avenue in Powelton Village in 2007.  Taking over a previously existing coffeehouse business, owners Daniel Thut and Douglas Witmer slowly and steadily made improvements to the cafe, but didn’t do the kind of complete building overhaul they have become known for at 43rd and Baltimore, or at 45th and Locust…until now.

On June 11, The Green Line invites the public to celebrate the newly renovated café, made possible with funding from University City District.  The brightly colored building facade has been restored to its historic configuration with a large plate glass window facing the street.  The Green Line has also completed a retro-style hand-painted sign on the side of the building, which, with its 30-foot span, creates a new public landmark.

During the grand re-opening celebration, visitors will be treated to free Green Line organic and Fair-Trade coffee, as well as a spread of food samples from the Green Line’s own expanding menu of freshly prepared grab-and-go items.  There will also be raffle prizes, music, and other fun stuff!

West Philly’s own Jay Sand, of All Around This World, teams up with the Green Line to bring a totally unique program for kids 0-7. All Around This World at the Green Line combines the international children’s music, games and stories of Jay’s amazing classes with special guest performers, each an expert in the music or art of a different country.

Kids and their parents/caregivers sing, dance and play together while experiencing different languages, cultures and traditions.

We’re kicking off this monthly series with special guest Dan Scholnick, tabla player extraordinaire. Don’t miss it!

When it’s all done there will be beautiful windows overlooking the street, more seating inside, a new counter, refinished floors, and a fresh coat of paint. Supporters came out in the aftermath of Philly's historic blizzard to place bids in our Haiti Benefit art show.

Utilizing our contacts in Philadelphia’s art community and beyond, plus the newer social mediums of Twitter and Facebook, we were able to receive donations from nearly two dozen artists from around the country within a matter of a week-and-a-half. The opening reception and silent auction was a festive event that featured free pizza donated by neighboring Powelton Pizza.

Green Line co-owner Douglas Witmer, himself and artist and contributor to the show, said the idea for the event came from Ketch Wehr, also an artist and a member of the Green Line staff. “When Ketch suggested it, I knew immediately it was something we could get behind and pull off quickly. We started working our contacts and a few hours later we already had commitments of artwork from artists in Philly, New York, and San Francisco.

A few days before the event we displayed a gallery of the available work on its Facebook fan page and began to collect advance proxy bids via email. Witmer said the winning bids received online accounted for just under half of the proceeds raised.

When the bidding closed at 4pm, each of the 34 donated artworks had been sold for prices ranging from $5-$100. Witmer said, “we’re incredibly grateful to the people who lent their support and creative energy to the effort.”

The artworks will be on display at the Green Line | Powelton Village, 3649 Lancaster Avenue, until the first week of March.
