“Echo Chamber

In the resonant chambers of the heart and folds of the brain, we amplify and distill our memories. Some details are lost; others grow in vibrancy. Chemicals pulse through our shifting neural networks, subtly altering the stories we tell about what has happened to us; what we have witnessed; who we’ve been.

These portraits are experiments in distillation and amplification. Working from photo booth photos, I’ve responded not only to the dramatic flattening in the photos themselves, but to the nature of our nostalgia about these artifacts. Casting my friends as characters from Greek mythology, these ink-wash drawings play with the ways we perform for the flashbulb, and question the conventions around whose stories get to become iconic and eternal.

Artist Bio:

Corina Dross is an artist and illustrator whose work is often small, narrative, and sequential. Currently fascinated by neuroscience, mythology, and other systems of belief and inquiry, she enjoys unusual juxtapositions of images with text. Her artwork has mostly recently appeared in the 2012 Women Artists Datebook and she is best known for her illustrated card deck, Portable Fortitude, now in its third printing. Selected portfolio available at: www.corinadross.com.”

We will be having a new exhibit of work from Alicia Neal & Justin Gray hanging next week.

Their reception is on Friday, April 13th (7 – 9pm), and it’s going to be an excellent show!

“Alicia and Justin both studied illustration at the University of the Arts here in Philadelphia, between around the years 1998-2005.

Drawing on influences from her friends, the natural world, and observations from everything spanning the breadth of seasonal change to mythological creatures and dreams, Alicia creates painterly, mixed media pieces on and using a variety of mediums, in a neo-classical illustration style.

Justin in a nerd brained kook with a love of space marines, video games, and beefy dudes punching each other in movies. He uses a base of hand drawings to create complex, single digital images detailing entire worldscapes, food, and nonsense.”

After a very successful reception on First Friday, we’ve really been enjoying the dynamic images Thomasin has brought to the fore here.

COUNTERWEIGHT

“This collection is an exploration of desire under stress—fantasy cramped, truncated, and constrained by external factors—the Wild Dream Instinct bound and ingrown. It is one of the least

pre-meditated collections of work I have created so far and

therefor a very direct product of my internal state at the time—something I probably could have never put to image through a more conscious process. The visual symbols/codes that appear in this work emerged on their own, like a language devised by my hands to facilitate conversation between two parts of myself that had lost their ability to communicate directly: fragmented landscape and architectural elements; tension drawn through braids and ropes; leafy overgrowth that, in one frame, forms a protective nest, and in the next a tangled obstruction; points of constraint, weight, tipping, pooling. Every image came as a surprise, and it was not until I had ten or twelve of them in front of me that I understood what I was illustrating.”

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Thomasin Parnes is a queer artist, junk curator, and DIY decoration-maker who can most often be found meticulously arranging boxes and cans (their secondary aesthetic practice) on the shelves of Mariposa Food Co-op. They look forward to 2012 as the year in which wild dreams and escape fantasies take back the space (real and imaginary) that they deserve.

You can read his artist statement here:

There Are Creatures in the Wilderness

“When I walk in the woods I am always looking for the small creatures.
Sometimes I find them in streams or on trees, and sometimes I do not see
them at all. I do not know if you partake in this idle pastime but if you
do perhaps you have seen things I have seen, and perhaps you have seen
things all your own.

I seek to recreate the edges of those holes worn in a person’s past – to
create images of situations that conjure up a memory you may have had,
something similar to a feeling you once experienced. To make images that
allow you to place yourself in them, to change them around and use it as a
patch for a hole you have, to make your story more complete. In my
paintings I attempt to capture the beauty of faded memories and dreams. I
think there are certain things in life that all people have been astounded
by, hence my large skies, distant horizons, and imaginary creatures. I
hope to create not moments of greatness, but rather moments where
greatness has become mundane and attainable, moments that the viewer can
place themselves inside.”

Daniel Oliva, a Philadelphia based artist, holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. He has had exhibitions at Pentimenti Gallery, Painted Bride Art Center, Sedgwick Cultural Center, CFEVA, Main Line Art Center in Philadelphia; About Glamour Gallery, Brooklyn; and more. Many private collectors have commissioned his paintings.

His work will be on view at the Green Line Baltimore from January 3rd through February 28th.
Daniel Oliva – Selected Night Works

“In the current exhibition of selected paintings and digital collages from the series “Nightscapes” I have explored eternal themes of darkness and light, knowledge and ignorance, culture and nature through a new lens: satellite imagery of the earth and universe. Our understanding of these new satellite images and their consequences for our culture is still in early development, but I believe they belong to the art historical landscape tradition as it moves into the 21st Century. Through new technology we gain immense knowledge about the cosmos, simultaneously the stars in our night sky are disappearing as the face of our planet increasingly resembles those stars. Today we have gained more knowledge of the universe than any people in history, and every night we look for stars in a night sky that is diluted by a multitude of burning bulbs.

My ultimate goal is to present the viewer with something they have not seen before, and will need to be aware of if they choose to consider humanity’s current and future place in the universe.”
