Local artist Shawn Bonsky will be exhibiting at the Green Line Powelton from January 4th – the end of February.

You can read his artist statement here:

There Are Creatures in the Wilderness

“When I walk in the woods I am always looking for the small creatures.
Sometimes I find them in streams or on trees, and sometimes I do not see
them at all. I do not know if you partake in this idle pastime but if you
do perhaps you have seen things I have seen, and perhaps you have seen
things all your own.

I seek to recreate the edges of those holes worn in a person’s past – to
create images of situations that conjure up a memory you may have had,
something similar to a feeling you once experienced. To make images that
allow you to place yourself in them, to change them around and use it as a
patch for a hole you have, to make your story more complete. In my
paintings I attempt to capture the beauty of faded memories and dreams. I
think there are certain things in life that all people have been astounded
by, hence my large skies, distant horizons, and imaginary creatures. I
hope to create not moments of greatness, but rather moments where
greatness has become mundane and attainable, moments that the viewer can
place themselves inside.”

Daniel Oliva, a Philadelphia based artist, holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. He has had exhibitions at Pentimenti Gallery, Painted Bride Art Center, Sedgwick Cultural Center, CFEVA, Main Line Art Center in Philadelphia; About Glamour Gallery, Brooklyn; and more. Many private collectors have commissioned his paintings.

His work will be on view at the Green Line Baltimore from January 3rd through February 28th.
Daniel Oliva – Selected Night Works

“In the current exhibition of selected paintings and digital collages from the series “Nightscapes” I have explored eternal themes of darkness and light, knowledge and ignorance, culture and nature through a new lens: satellite imagery of the earth and universe. Our understanding of these new satellite images and their consequences for our culture is still in early development, but I believe they belong to the art historical landscape tradition as it moves into the 21st Century. Through new technology we gain immense knowledge about the cosmos, simultaneously the stars in our night sky are disappearing as the face of our planet increasingly resembles those stars. Today we have gained more knowledge of the universe than any people in history, and every night we look for stars in a night sky that is diluted by a multitude of burning bulbs.

My ultimate goal is to present the viewer with something they have not seen before, and will need to be aware of if they choose to consider humanity’s current and future place in the universe.”

Leeway Grant recipient Jardyn Lake will be showing at the Green Line Locust from December 22nd through January.

Jardyn’s Statement:

“Paraiso: The Spirit of Salvador da Bahia is a photographic art collection from a three month journey I embarked on in Salvador, Bahia in 2009. It is a storytelling of the legacy and history of Black people of Salvador. The photos in this collection represent a resiliency and self-determination that Afro-Brazilians have had in preserving their African culture.

By traveling to Salvador, Brazil, the center of Afro-Brazilian culture, I had firsthand access to capture images of Afro-Brazilian people and ways of life that reflect the essence of their African heritage. This essence is reflected all around, but is particularly visible in the traditions of Candomble, an African-based religion that has been one of the sole forces in preserving African culture. In this exhibition you will find: symbols of the tradition of Candomble, practitioners and priestesses of the tradition, as well as sacred places and celebrations.

Finally, this exhibition seeks to offer a simplistic sense of realism of the class, racial, religious, and economic politics of Afro-Brazilian people. It also seeks to counter the myth that the media presents of Brazil as a white nation and to help “re-imagine” the “face” of Brazil as a Black nation.

It is my hope that Paraiso invokes a sense of inspiration in sharing the legacies and histories of Afro-Brazilian people.”

ABOUT SPECIMEN IMAGINARY

Specimen Imaginary features paintings by Kaitlin Kylie Pomerantz made in 2009-10. These works explore the conditions the specimen—a sample object plucked from out of the natural world to act as a example of its species or kind, and meant, literally, to make us see something beyond itself (specare is latin for to see). Though these paintings draw from the history of still life and scientific illustration, they break away from strict representation and enter a realm of the imaginary, wherein the appearance of the object at one moment is subordinate to the object’s existence over time as a rotting, growing, desiccating, living and dying thing.

“This ain’t your average charity gig. This October and November, Screens ‘N’ Spokes will celebrate art, bikes, and the community spirit they inspire. Green Line Cafe will feature a display of original, limited-run screen prints from nationally acclaimed rock poster artists. All artwork was donated exclusively for this benefit show.

Screens ‘N’ Spokes returns to Philadelphia for the fifth straight year. Since 2007, the Screens ‘N’ Spokes bike team has raised over $230,000 to benefit the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). Screens ‘N’ Spokes was conceived by Sam Verrill. Sam’s girlfriend, a Narberth local, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at age 20, during their junior year of college seven years ago.

Sam, an avid concertgoer and rock poster collector as well as a bike enthusiast, wanted a new way to contribute to the Bike MS City to Shore Ride. “The poster medium is a tried and true means of expressive communication, and we are trying with this show to publicize an extremely worthy and important cause,” Verrill said. “The idea was to really energize our peer group to take action and have fun with a charity.”

Each design is available as a framed or unframed print. They will be for sale online starting October 10 at www.screensnspokes.etsy.com. All proceeds will benefit the Bike MS City to Shore Bike Ride, a signature event of the Greater Delaware Valley Chapter of the NMSS.”
