Thu, October 21 – Danbert Nobacon (of Chumbawumba) / Charmaine’s Names

DANBERT NOBACON

DANBERT NOBACON, singer, songwriter, comedian, and “freak music legend” was a founding member of the anarchist punk rock band CHUMBAWAMBA. The band’s worldwide hit from the TUBTHUMPER album (1997) gave its members fascinating insights into the way mainstream media limit a culture’s ideas, from Barbara Walters’ questions about anarchism on prime time, to the way David Letterman’s staff lost it because the band changed one of the choruses of their hit song to “Free Mumia Abu Jamal!”

His career has been long (thirty years), wild, and always imaginative.  Not to mention mischievous and political—he famously dumped a bucket of ice water over John Prescott, the British deputy prime minister, at an awards ceremony, in London, in 1998, to protest the Blair government’s treatment of striking dockworkers. He was also arrested in Florence, Italy that year for wearing a skirt, on suspicion of being a male prostitute.

He released The Library Book of the World, with Chicago band the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, on Bloodshot Records, in 2007. The song “Jamestown 2007” from this album appeared over the end credits of the film “Repo Chick” (2009) in which Nobacon also has a small speaking part.

His first novel “Three Dead Princes – an Anarchist Fairytale” illustrated by film-maker Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid and Nancy) will be published on October 1st 2010

Danbert lives, writes, sings, does a community radio show and grows food in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in Twsip WA.
